What you will notice
A failing backlight usually shows up in one of these ways.
- The screen looks dim overall, even with brightness turned all the way up
- Patches of the screen are noticeably darker than the rest
- The picture flickers or the brightness pulses up and down
- The screen appears black but you can just make out an image if you shine a torch at it
- Colours look washed out or greyish rather than sharp
- Sound plays normally but the picture never appears
What causes this
Backlight problems are usually traced back to one of the following, and telling them apart is part of the diagnosis.
- Individual LED backlight strips failing, either from age or a manufacturing fault
- A faulty driver board sending the wrong voltage to the strips
- Damaged or corroded connectors between the strips and the driver board
- Physical damage to the diffuser panel or strips after an impact or fall
What we do
We test each backlight strip along with the driver board using meters, rather than guessing. Once we find the faulty section, we replace failed LEDs or full strips with new components, check the driver board separately, and reassemble the panel. Where a strip has failed because of a driver fault, we address the driver as well, since replacing the strip on its own would only fail again. This fault is just as common on TVs in shops, offices and other business premises as it is at home, and we treat both the same way.
Call-out or collect and return
A technician can usually diagnose a backlight fault during a call-out, whether at your home or your business, often by testing the strips and driver board with a meter on site. If the fault needs bench repair, we collect your TV, repair it, and return it to you. Which path applies to your TV depends on what we find during diagnosis, and we will explain this before any work goes ahead.
